Formal announcement of the results of the national referendum on the Polish accession to the European Union

9th June 2003 at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski, the Marshal of the Sejm Marek Borowski, the Marshal of the Senate Longin Pastusiak and the Prime Minister Leszek Miller participated in the formal announcement of the results of the two-day-long national referendum on the Polish accession to the European Union. After the announcement the Polish President said that the news about a positive outcome of the referendum was a crowning achievement of the Polish Nation, who had always fought throughout its history for freedom and democracy. The president wanted to thank all of the countrymen who decided to vote in the referendum, no matter what their decision was. He said that he was very grateful to all who had cast their votes for “yes” but he also respected the opinions of those who voted against the accession, as surely not only would they be constructively critical but also they would make an effort to help to prepare the country to the accession to the European Union as well as to perform well in the EU structures. At the end, the Polish President thanked to all who had engaged themselves in the pre-referendum preparations. He also hoped that the reasons which convinced the society to vote for the accession would prove right in the nearest future.
