Meeting of the President of the Republic of Poland with the Chancellor of Germany, Gerhard Schröder

On 1 August 2004, the President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, met with German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder who arrived, accompanied by a delegation, to attend the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. The Polish President said he appreciated the Chancellor’s personal participation in the Warsaw anniversary commemoration as evidence of the profound transformations that had taken place in Polish-German relations. The fact that Polish-German relations had reached a very high level in all areas, both in the bilateral and multilateral contexts, was emphasised during the talks. Poland’s accession to the European Union provides new stimuli for these relations. The need was pointed out to energize trilateral collaboration within the Weimar Triangle as an important forum for consultations strengthening cooperation in Europe as a whole. The issue of a further EU enlargement and the problems involved was raised. Other issues of current concern in bilateral relations were also discussed.
