We unite in mourning and prayer

On 11 November 2006, the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, sent a message of condolence to Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič in connection with the killing of a Slovak serviceman in Iraq.

The message reads as follows:

‘Our two Nations, the Slovak People and the Polish People, have been affected by tragic news from Iraq. A Slovak serviceman, sergeant 1st class Rastislav Neplech, was killed in a terrorist attack on the night of 10 November near the town of Al Kut, Wasit Province. In the same attack, a Polish serviceman, sergeant Tomasz Murkowski was killed alongside the Slovak. Our servicemen lost their lives while returning from a mine-clearing operation meant to bring security, stability and peace to the Iraqi people. In our joint mission, carried out within the framework of the Multinational Division Centre-South, we have sustained new losses so painful to all of us. Both our Nations are deeply affected by this news. On behalf of the People of Poland, I would like to extend to you, Mr. President, our sympathies for the bereaved family. We unite in mourning and prayer with all those affected by this loss.’
