We want an improvement of mutual relations

On 5th October 2006 the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Mr Sergey Lavrov on his visit in Poland.

Both parties declared their desire to further improve Polish-Russian relations i.a. by continuing political dialogue and through cultural
initiatives. Opportunities were also indicated in economic cooperation. Minister Lavrov assured of the desire to regulate matters connected with Polish exports of agricultural and food products to Russia.

Moreover the interlocutors exchanged views about the current situation in Polish-Russian relations. The President of Poland informed about the joint statement of Presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine in the matter of Georgia. He also noted that in a recent discussion he was persuading the President of Georgia to choose a peaceful solution of the tense situation between Moscow and Tbilisi. President Lech Kaczyński assured that Poland wants peace and stability in the Southern Caucasus region.

The talks also concerned matters connected with the energy sector, including the building of the Northern Pipeline, cooperation with Russia on the EU and NATO forum as well as the US National Missile Defence programme.
