Poland enjoys excellent relations with the United Kingdom

With reference to today’s article in the ‘Dziennik’ daily, we present below the position of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland:

1. A visit of the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, to the United Kingdom, scheduled for late June 2006, had been prepared for a few months.

2. On 14 June 2006, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Warsaw, Charles Crawford, handed over a letter from Prime Minister Tony Blair to President Lech Kaczyński. The British Prime Minister informed the President in it that he would not be present in London on 29 June 2006 for important domestic reasons. At the same time, Tony Blair suggested that he and the Polish President could meet during an official dinner on 28 June 2006.

Regrettably, as President Lech Kaczyński is to participate in the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Poznań events of June 1956, the date suggested by the British side for a meeting with Prime Minister Blair was not acceptable.

3. The newspaper’s allegations that President Lech Kaczyński’s visit to the UK was cancelled for political reasons are absolutely untrue. Both sides had agreed earlier that a new autumn date for the Polish President’s visit to Britain would be set shortly.

4. From the very beginning, the programme of Lech Kaczyński’s visit to the UK had included an audience with Queen Elisabeth II to be granted to the President of the Republic of Poland and Mrs. Kaczyńska. Any allegations connecting the cancellation of the President’s visit to the Queen’s official birthday celebrations are absolutely unfounded. The Queen does not hold her official birthday celebrations with any other heads of state attending. The ceremony is a domestic event.

5. In this connection, the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland would like to announce that on 17 June 2006, the President of the Republic of Poland sent a message of congratulations to Queen Elisabeth II on her 80th birthday.

6. It is the opinion of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland that Poland enjoys excellent relations with the United Kingdom and the newspaper’s allegations are absolutely unfounded.
