A meeting between the President of the Republic of Poland and the President of the Czech Republic

On 25 January 2007, the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, paid a short working visit to Poland at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński.

The meeting was devoted to the Constitutional Treaty and to President Kaczyński’s recent visit to Turkey. The partners discussed a timetable for the next few meetings within the EU framework, in particular those connected with consultations on the Constitutional Treaty.

President Lech Kaczyński and President Vaclav Klaus declared their willingness to continue bilateral consultations on the EU’s Constitutional Treaty as well as on other issues related to European integration processes.

After the meeting, a press conference of the two Presidents was held, in the course of which the Polish President said:

‘We are in the midst of a very intensive debate within the EU, an organisation that the Czech Republic and the Republic of Poland, countries with close ties to each other, are members of; therefore, it seems only natural to me for us to hold a discussion focusing primarily on these issues. We exchanged comments on the Constitutional Treaty and on the present political situation in Europe, including in the context of the Treaty. We spoke about the possible close cooperation between our countries on this matter. Naturally, we used this opportunity to discuss the political situation at home; Prime Minister Topolanek’s government has recently been given vote of confidence. We also discussed several other issues more briefly. As allies we talked about Turkey for a moment, a country that I visited only two days ago. I think it is natural for two befriended countries, being members of both the EU and NATO, to share information of importance in this respect. Finally, we exchanged a few sentences concerning the proposal made to our country by the United States. But this was the last subject that we addressed, not the first one.’
