The President of the Republic of Poland in Istanbul

On 24 January 2007, the second day of the official visit to the Republic of Turkey, the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and the First Lady arrived in Istanbul.

At noon, the Polish President met with the Turkish Prime Minister. Next, he went to Adampol (Polonezköy), a village founded in 1842 by Michał Czajkowski with Prince Adam Czartoryski’s approval, inhabited today by several dozen descendants of Polish émigrés. The Presidential Couple was welcomed by the local authorities, children and the local parish priest. It visited the church and the local standing exhibition and laid bunches of flowers before Atatürk’s bust. President Kaczyński and the First Lady attended a luncheon hosted by Adampol’s administrator.

Back in Istanbul, the Polish President and the First Lady visited the Adam Mickiewicz Museum and laid a bunch of flowers on the poet’s sarcophagus. The Presidential Couple also visited the Blue Mosque and the museum at the ‘Hagia Sophia’ Basilica of Divine Wisdom.

In the evening, the Polish President attended the 2006 Success Awards ceremony co-organised by the European Journalists Society and the Turkish Businesswomen’s Association (TİKAD). During the event, President Kaczyński received the 2006 European Statesman of the Year title, conferred upon him in recognition of his efforts to promote the idea of Turkey’s EU membership.
