Cooperation incomparably closer than before

On 14 June 2007 in the Presidential Palace Lech Kaczyński, President of the Republic of Poland met with Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic who came with a working visit to Poland at the invitation of President Kaczyński.

President Lech Kaczyński and President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke privately. Current EU matters were discussed. Particular attention was given to matters of the debate around the future of the European Union and the Constitutional Treaty, especially in the context of the European Council summit planned for 21-22 June 2007 in Brussels. During the meeting the talks also covered Polish-French economic cooperation and enhancing the collaboration with respect to internal affairs and justice. It was also agreed that in autumn a meeting would take place during the Polish-French summit with participation of the Presidents of Poland and France. The President of the French Republic accepted the invitation of President Kaczyński to a meeting in the Hel residence in September 2007.

The discussion continued during a working lunch offered by President Kaczyński on the occasion of the visit of the President of the French Republic in Poland.

The lunch was followed by a press conference, during which President Lech Kaczyński said:

”Distinguished Mr President, Ladies and Gentlemen!

First of all I wanted to thank President Nicolas Sarkozy for his visit in Poland, for an extremely interesting discussion – a discussion, which was connected with many interesting proposals; a discussion, which I consider to have been an extremely effective one; a discussion, which indicates that France has a President who can indeed solve many an issue among those, which arise in today’s Europe of 27 members, and which must be solved in order for Europe to move ahead as fast as it can. I am indeed extremely satisfied; I think that we are in a position to cooperate far closer than was the case before. We discussed a huge number of issues connected not only with the European constitution, but it was covered as well. We both are convinced that the 21st and in particular the 22nd of June this year, that is the second day of the conference, should be a day of success of France and of Poland, but above all of whole Europe. Thank you very much”.
