President Kaczyński met with Prime Minister Blair

On 27th April 2007 in Belweder President Lech Kaczyński met with British Prime Minister Tony Blair who had arrived with a working visit in Poland at the invitation of the Polish President.

President Lech Kaczyński and Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke in private. Current EU matters were discussed, especially the debate about the future of the Union and of the Constitutional Treaty. Particular attention was given to the US missile defence system. Moreover selected international matters were also raised in the discussion, including the situation in the Balkans, in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran.

After the private discussion a press conference was held, at which President Kaczyński said:

” I wish to express my satisfaction with this opportunity to meet Prime Minister Blair here in Warsaw. We are discussing, and we will be discussing the subjects of interest to the two sides. Since we both belong to the European Union the issue of the Constitutional Treaty is of paramount importance, and in this respect our problems are very convergent. I think that in the next session that we will have, we will also look at other issues. What we have already discussed is the future shape of the Constitutional Treaty, which may bear some other name, but which will be a basic treaty for the European Union. We spoke about various concepts and about the desired pace of work. What Prime Minister Blair told me was very comforting as regards the opportunities arising now. Naturally we shall act on them as concrete political facts arise, especially when the new President of the French Republic is sworn into office. It is now only six weeks left until the end of the German Presidency. I hope that it will be a very productive period of time as regards such shaping of the future European treaty that will take into account divergent views of the various states and will be palatable to all - to governments, to parliaments, and in some countries, where it is necessary, also acceptable in their referendums. I wish to thank Prime Minister Blair very much for this part of our discussion. This has been an extremely interesting meeting”.

After the end of the press conference the discussion was continued during a working lunch offered by President Kaczyński on the occasion of Prime Minister Blair’s visit in Poland.
