Statement by President of RP

Below you will find the statement made by President of the Republic of Poland Mr Lech Kaczyński in connection with the decision by the President of the Russian Federation to recognize independence of Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia:

“As President of the Republic of Poland, I express a strong objection to the decision of the President of the Russian Federation to recognize independence of two Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is an attempt to sanction the consequences of an unprecedented aggression by the Russian Federation against the independent Georgian state. Such actions, being entirely incompatible with international law , meet with my opposition and condemnation.

We categorically stand against the undermining of Georgia’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and against all the attempts to restrain the sovereignty of Georgia.

Russian activities give rise to legitimate objections and concerns in the international community and cannot fail to elicit a resolute response from the states of the free world.

I urge President Dmitri Medvedev in strongest terms to immediately withdraw all Russian troops from the whole territory of Georgia.

In these trying times for the Georgians, I wish to reaffirm unswerving support of the people of Poland to the Georgian Nation.”
