President of RP sends a message of condolence to the President of the Republic of Slovenia

On 26 February 208, president of the Republic of Poland Mr Lech Kaczyński sent a message of condolence to President of the Republic of Slovenia Mr Danilo Türk in connection with the passing of former Slovenian President Mr Janez Drnovšek.

The message reads as follows:

”Dear Mr President,

It is with great sadness that I have learnt about the passing of former President of the Republic of Slovenia Mr Janez Drnovšek whom I had the pleasure of knowing personally. The passing away of Dr Drnovšek is a great loss not only to the Republic of Slovenia. A politician of considerable stature has gone away, a man who for more than a decade led the Republic of Slovenia and enjoyed high confidence among his compatriots. Slovenia is nowadays an altogether different country than it was when Dr Janez Drnovšek was first elected the country’s president. In those recent years, you country, Mr President, has become member of NATO and the European Union assuming the presidency of the latter as of January 2008. Dr Janez Drnovšek has played a significant role in securing these important achievements. A few days ago, we were bereaved of a man who was concerned about the plight of ordinary people, also citizens of other countries than Slovenia. With appreciation do I recall Mr Drnovšek’s efforts to restore peace in Darfur. In most recent months, President Drnovšek worked with great dedication for the benefit of refugees in Darfur bringing the tragic genocide which was perpetrated there to the attention of the whole world. Mr President, on my own behalf and on behalf of the entire Polish Nation I wish to extend into your hands our most sincere condolences on the passing of former President of the Republic of Slovenia Mr Janez Drnovšek.

Lech Kaczyński
President of the Republic of Poland”
