Tomasz Zdrojewski - Advisor to the President for health

Mr Zdrojewski was born on 10 November 1957 in Sopot. He has a Ph. D. in medicine. Specialist in internal diseases and hypertensiology. Lecturer and scholar in the Medical Academy in Gdańsk.

 

In the years 1989-1990 he enjoyed a Kościuszko Foundation scholarship in clinical cardiology (Columbus, Ohio State University, USA). In 1991-1993 he was a scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation and DFG at the University in Wuerzburg, in Germany. Since 1994 he has been extensively dealing with clinical epidemiology, prevention, pharmacoeconomics and health policy. In the years 1997 and 2002 he was the main author and co-ordinator of the Natpol and Natpol Plus programmes – the first nationwide research using a representative method to assess the prevalence and control of risk factors of infarct and brain stroke in Poland. In the years 1999-2001, in co-operation with the European Cardiological Society he initiated and implemented an educational programme in Polish opinion-leading circles (Polish Parliament, NSZZ Solidarność, OPZZ). In 2002 – member and secretary of the Team of Experts for preparation of the POLKARD National Programme of Prophylaxis and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases. Since 2003 he is secretary of the POLKARD National Programme. Mr Zdrojewski initiated and co-ordinated national research and intervention programmes, such as the Polish Project of 4 Cities, Polish Project of 400 Cities as well as long-term regional projects: Sopkard 1999-2009 and Health for the Pomeranians 2005-2013. In 2004 he was Poland’s representative in negotiating the “Healthy Heart” documents with the EU Commission. In November 2005 he initiated work of the “Polish Health 2005-10-20” Team, appointed by the Minister of Health in order to prepare the key assumptions for turnaround of the health protection system. Until his appointment for Advisor to the President of the Republic of Poland Mr Zdrojewski was head of this Team. In the years 2001-2006 he was press spokesman of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk. In 2006 he recieved an individual reward from the Minister of Health.

 

Mr Zdrojewski is a member of various working groups as well as boards of Polish and European scientific societies. The author or coauthor of more than 100 research papers in cardiology, clinical epidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, prevention and health policy, including important articles describing the epidemiological situation in Poland, which appeared in renowned foreign magazines.
