"The Vietnamese market and authorities are open to Polish goods and investments", Polish President Andrzej Duda announced after a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Tran Dai Quang in Hanoi on Tuesday.

The Polish president made the statement during a press conference with Polish and Vietnamese journalists.

"President Tran Dai Quang assured me that both the Vietnamese authorities and the country's market are open to Polish goods and investments", President Duda declared.

Earlier, in the presence of the heads of state, the two sides signed several intergovernmental agreements, including a deal on higher education between the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training. Upon another agreement, Poland will grant a EUR 250 million loan to Vietnam for the purchase of goods from Polish manufacturers.

Two memoranda were signed by the Agriculture and Environment Ministries of the two countries as well as the Polish Ministries of Development and Finance and the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade.

A USD 50 million accord was signed by Poland's Adamed Holding pharmaceutical producer and the Vietnamese Dat Vi Phu Pharmaceutical JSC. Under the deal Adamed bought a majority stake in the Binh Duong-based company. This is Poland's biggest direct investment in Vietnam.

The Polish Press Agency (PAP) also signed a cooperation memorandum with the Vietnamese Information Agency.

"All the signed documents (agreements and memoranda - PAP) build the sphere of mutual relations. And I believe they will make it easier for the two countries to develop business and academic contacts", President Duda stressed.

The Polish head of state also expressed his conviction that owing to the financial agreement having been signed, "Vietnamese uniformed services will soon receive boats delivered by Cenzin (a Polish foreign trade enterprise, an importer and exporter of armaments, military equipment and technology - PAP) as well as police vehicles and fire trucks produced by the Polish Wiss company".

President Duda added he hoped the agreement signed by the Education Ministries would increase the number of Vietnamese students in Poland and would make it possible to launch Polish language courses at Hanoi University.

He also thanked his hosts for making it possible for Poland to open a Polish Investment and Trade Agency bureau in Ho Chi Minh. An official ceremony, attended by President Duda, will take place on Thursday.

According to President Duda, the bureau "is an expression of Poland's committment to the Vietnamese market and of how important it is for Poland to have its companies ever more present on the Vietnamese market, as well as Vietnamese ones in Poland".

"Ten years ago, when the Polish and Vietnamese PMs met, bilateral trade totalled USD 0.5 billion. They declared the need to double it in the span of a few years. And after ten years, it is not only twice as much but even four times higher as bilateral trade is now worth around USD 2 billion annually", Polish head of state went on to say.

President Duda also expressed his hope that the visit to Vietnam as well as a return visit to Poland, to pay which he had invited President Tran Dai Quang, would further help increase bilateral trade.

The Polish president also thanked his Vietnamese counterpart for Vietnam's support of Poland's candidacy as a UN Security Council non-permanent member in 2018-2019.

"Vietnam supported our candidacy, and this also helped Poland achieve such a great result of the voting", he emphasised, declaring Poland's support of Vietnam's candidacy as a UN Security Council non-permanent member in 2020-2021.

The Vietnamese head of state said his talks with President Duda had also focused on "regional and international issues which are of mutual interest". "We agreed that all disputes should be solved by peaceful means, fully respecting diplomatic and legal processes", he added.(PAP)
