Presidential Couple on a visit to the United States - first day

US-visiting President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda on Wednesday visited the Archive of the Polish Army Veterans' Association in America.

 

Next they met with representatives of Jewish organisations.  "There was unanimous agreement that those who want Polish-Jewish relations to be positive today have the great responsibility of avoiding the radical attitudes that have been lately coming to the fore on both sides," Chief of the Cabinet of the President Krzysztof Szczerski told.

 

Later, President Duda had lunch with the members of the UN Eastern Europe Group.

 

On Wednesday afternoon, the Presidential Couple laid flowers at the Katyń monument in Jersey City, which commemorates 22,000 Polish POWs mass-executed by the Soviets in April and May 1940 in west Russia's Katyń Forest.

 

 

 

The visit, to last until Sunday, will include the President's participation in a UN Security Council debate and meetings with the Polish diaspora in Chicago.

In connection with Poland taking over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on 1 May, the Polish President will lead a high-level open debate on the role of international law in maintaining international peace and security, at the New York United Nations headquarters. On Friday in Chicago, Andrzej Duda will meet with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner. Then the Presidential Couple will visit the Polish Museum of America, and also lay flowers at the Katyń Monument, as well as at the Smoleńsk Commemorative Plaque at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles. In the afternoon, at the Art Institute, the President will meet the mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.

 

On Friday evening, the President will visit the base of the Illinois National Guard in Kankakee, where he will meet with American soldiers of Polish descent.

 

On Saturday, the President and the First Lady will meet representatives of the Polish diaspora living in the United States. The president is also scheduled to give a speech. According to Adam Kwiatkowski, the president’s aide, President Duda will hand out state decorations. He will also give out souvenir diplomas to Polish schools.
