We hope for decisions at Friday's  Meeting of the Bucharest Nine in Warsaw and the July NATO Summit in Brussels, President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday after talks with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

 

The leaders of nine countries forming NATO's eastern flank will meet in Warsaw on Friday at the Bucharest Nine Meeting, which will adopt a declaration for the July NATO Summit in Brussels. See also: Eastern flank state leaders meet in Warsaw

 

Attending the Warsaw meeting will be the presidents of Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria, as well as the head of the Czech parliament. The meeting will be chaired by Andrzej Duda and Klaus Iohannis.

 

"We hope that our Friday meeting, and, most of all, the NATO summit in Brussels, will make decisions that open prospects for building an environment of security and cooperation in our part of Europe," Andrzej Duda told a press conference with Iohannis.

 

President Duda stressed that security measures were needed not only in Central and Eastern Europe but also southern Europe, and "everywhere, where support in building a security architecture is needed." He also spoke out for support of Ukraine's and Georgia's NATO membership ambitions.

 

Andrzej Duda also mentioned a Thursday conference pending the September Three Seas Summit in Bucharest, and voiced hope that the summit will focus on joint infrastructure projects by the Three Seas countries.President Duda added that the Three Seas conference will be attended by a high US Administration official, and stressed that the US "treated this cooperation form very seriously."

 

The Three Seas initiative groups countries lying between the Adtriatic, Black and Baltic seas.

 

During his meeting with Klaus Iohannis, President Duda also discussed bilateral relations and economic cooperation.

 

President Iohannis is in Warsaw in connection with this year's Polish independence centenary. (PAP)
