Nothing else but bold and prudent actions by members of parliament and the government will allow Poland to continue down the path of stable economic growth, President Bronisław Komorowski said in his address to the Sejm at the Lower House’s opening session in its 7th term. Among the crucial tasks facing Poland and the Polish government, President Komorowski mentioned counteracting the economic crisis and countering the threat of weakening the European idea; improving the functioning of the state; combating social exclusion and addressing the demographic challenge.

The President emphasized that in the 9 October election most of the Poles voted in favour of a continuation of the policy pursued to date. - I believe this will be a bold continuation, -he said.

The President opened his address by congratulating the members of parliament elected for the Sejm’s 7th term. He stressed the fact that in their work they would have to search for an answer to the question about what is most important for Poland and for the Polish people.

In the afternoon at the Presidential Palace, President Bronisław Komorowski received the resignation of the cabinet, while at the same time appointing the outgoing Council of Ministers to act as a temporary government. Subsequently, the President designated the outgoing Prime Minister, Civic Platform Chairman Donald Tusk, as Prime Minister.

Bronisław Komorowski also opened today the first session of the Senate in the House’s 7th term, in the course of which the new senators took their oath of office and elected the speaker and deputy speakers of the House.

At the opening session of the Senate, the president emphasized that it had been, was and would be the House’s duty to watch over the quality of the laws being made, and that the debate at the Senate should focus as much as possible on the substance of the matter and be affected as little as possible by party politics.

Bills need to be processed in such a way as to ensure that the end effect does not raise any doubts as to its constitutionality, the president emphasized in the Senate. He further added that reflection on law making makes the Senate a natural ally of the presidential office.
