The presidents of Poland and Latvia, Bronisław Komorowski and Valdis Zatlers, met on Monday afternoon in Wisła in the Beskids. The Latvian leader came for a working visit.

The Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs in the Chancellery of the President, Jaromir Sokołowski, said that the talks between the presidents focused on bilateral relations, as well as on relations between the Baltic countries.

“Polish-Latvian relations are indeed very good,” Sokołowski stated. “The Polish minority is under full protection of the Latvian state. Economic and political cooperation looks very good in all areas.”

According to the Undersecretary of State in the Chancellery of the President, the objective of the talks is to cooperate more closely as regards energy security, both within the whole European Union and the Baltic Sea region.

“There are several projects that are being discussed between the countries situated on the Baltic Sea. One of them is the Lithuanian suggestion of building a nuclear power plant in Visaginas. There is also a proposal, supported by Poland, of building a gas interconnector between Poland and Lithuania. Latvia is considering construction of a liquefied natural gas terminal,” he said.

The presidents also discussed current affairs on the European agenda, such as matters pertaining to the competitiveness pact and the issue of both countries joining the Eurozone.

The Latvian President visited Poland at the invitation of Bronisław Komorowski. It was a revisit – the Polish President was in Latvia last September.

Bronisław Komorowski welcomed Valdis Zatlers at the presidential residence on Zadni Groń in Wisła, where they also spent Tuesday morning. One of the places they visited before the return flight was the wooden church in Kubalonka.
