On Sunday, President Bronisław Komorowski, together with his wife, attended the beatification of Pope John Paul II celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican. Scores of delegations from around the world took part in the celebration.

President Komorowski paid tribute to the beatified Pope in front of John Paul II's coffin that was on display in St. Peter’s Basilica.

On Monday, the presidential couple was received by Pope Benedict XVI at a private audience. Poland’s president thanked the Pope for John Paul II’s beatification.

The private audience took place at the Pope’s private library after a thanksgiving Mass for the beatification of John Paul II that was said by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State.
‘Thank you for the beatification, Holy Father’ said the Polish president at the beginning of the talk with Pope Benedict XVI. ‘It’s hard to imagine a more happy moment’, continued the Polish president. ‘Yesterday, I felt that the Church to which Poland belongs is part of the Universal Church.’

The Pope, during the talk with Poland’s president, said: ‘Viva la Polonia’ (Long Live Poland). Among the presidential entourage was Tadeusz Mazowiecki, former Polish prime minister.

Bronisław Komorowski gave Pope Benedict XVI a drawing depicting Saint Stanislaus, a Polish bishop and martyr. The president explained to the Pope, that celebration in honour of Poland’s chief patron saint coincides with the thanksgiving celebration for John Paul II’s beatification.

The Polish president received a low relief showing the liberation of St. Peter from Benedict XVI. At their farewell, Anna Komorowska said to the Pope that when she was with her husband at the Vatican last year, she had asked for a blessing for a granddaughter who was expected to be born. ‘Now, we expect a grandson and also ask for a blessing’, said the president’s wife”.
