The President: Let us celebrate this day together

The Independence Day in Poland   |   The Independence Day in Poland The Independence Day in Poland

During the central celebrations of the Independence Day on Friday, November 11, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, President Bronisław Komorowski requested that the Independence Day should not be celebrated against one another. “Let us celebrate this day together”, he urged.

The President pointed out that the Polish people with their profound love of liberty and their readiness to make extraordinary sacrifices for the cause of freedom must also respect in their every-day life the right of other people to profess their own opinions, sometimes differing from ours. “Let us not celebrate freedom, let us learn to practise it in our every-day lives, not just on festive occasions; may the respect for our own and the others’ freedom be present in our celebrations of the Independence Day”, he proposed.

Following the tradition of recent years where the Presidents of Poland and Lithuania have been both attending together the National Days of the two States, President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite took part in the celebration of the National Independence Day of the Republic of Poland on November 11.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė participated in the observances on the Marshal Pilsudski Square delivering an address, laying a wraeth at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and accompanying Polish President Bronisław Komorowski in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Marshal Jozef Pilsudski Monument.

Subsequently, talks between the President of Poland and the President of Lithuania were held in the Presidential Palace. Under discussion were bilateral issues with particular regard of the current situation of the Polish minority in Lithuania, among others, in education. Moreover, economic and energy cooperation were addressed as well as regional and EU-related issues.
