Poland's 1996 Nobel Prize-winning poet Wislawa Szymborska was laid to rest Thursday in her native Krakow.

The secular ceremony at Krakow's Rakowicki Cemetery was attended by President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, cabinet members, MPs and representatives of the diplomatic corps. See also: "In her poems we could find brilliant advice"

In his address president Komorowski reminded that Szymborska always shunned publicity and strongly guarded her privacy.
"It isn't easy to bid farewell to this poet, Nobelist (...), as we know that she did not value officialdom and grudged time for ceremonies. She wanted to speak, and taught us the language of ordinary people: simple, straightforward, but without concealing her own emotions", Komorowski said.

Szymborska died in Krakow last week aged 88. (PAP)
