King Harald V of Norway and Queen Sonja started an official three-day visit to Poland on Wednesday. They will spend two days in Warsaw and one in Krakow.

The Norwegian royal couple was officially welcomed at the Presidential Palace by President Bronisław Komorowski and his wife Anna.

Polish-Norwegian relations may be further developed by closer cooperation in science, culture or environmental protection, Poland's President Bronisław Komorowski and Norway's King Harald V said after their meeting on Wednesday.

The visit confirms the will to strengthen the already good Polish-Norwegian relations, Poland's president said. The visit offers a "realistic chance to seek new cooperation areas" as confirmed by the Polish-Norwegian agreements signed on Wednesday.

"Polish-Norwegian relations as seen from Norwegian perspective are excellent," King Harald V said.

Earlier in the day Norway's foreign minister and Poland's minister for regional development signed agreements on scholarship programme, scholarship fund, promotion of cultural diversity and bilateral research cooperation.

Poland's and Norway's convergence of views and actions is based on the two countries' NATO membership, Poland's president said.

"I am convinced that our countries will present similar positions on issues significant for the alliance and for the security of our region at the forthcoming NATO summit," Bronisław Komorowski said.

The summit will be held on May 20 to 21 and will focus on Afghanistan.

Speaking about successes in bilateral cooperation in security and defence Poland’s president mentioned technological contracts and Norwegian grants. "These are the real money used for important projects and programmes in Poland," the president stressed. Poland received EUR 550 million as part of grants in 2004-2009.

As part of the European Economic Area and thanks to the grants Norway can support Poland in many areas, such as environmental protection, power industry, health protection, culture, King Harald V said.

A large group of businessmen in the Norwegian delegation on the current visit to Poland shows the big interest that Poland enjoys among Norwegian businessmen, King Harald V noted.

Poland's president thanked King Harald V and all Norwegians for the assistance offered to Poland's Solidarity in the time of Poland's struggle for freedom during martial law.

Poland is the biggest beneficiary of Norwegian grants. EUR 570 million was allocated to Poland in 2009-2014 with the main aim to lessen social and economic inequalities and to strengthen bilateral relations.(PAP)
