King Harald V of Norway and Poland's President Bronisław Komorowski inaugurated on Thursday a conference on "Polish-Norwegian partnership". Present were Queen Sonja and First Lady Anna Komorowska.

The Norwegian king and the Polish president stressed that bilateral economic relations were growing stronger very quickly. They also emphasised the significance of cooperation in NATO and of aid granted to Poland as part of the Norwegian and EEA financial mechanisms.

In the years 2009-2014 Poland, the biggest beneficiary of Norwegian grants, is to receive over EUR 570 million to liquidate social and economic differences and consolidate bilateral relations.

King Harald V stressed that Poland was an important market for Norwegian fish products and added the two countries could develop cooperation in crude oil and gas.

President Komorowski declared that Poland's economy had much to offer to Norway as it had grown competitive and attractive.

"I am convinced that together we can strengthen Europe's north, our common region and an area of our care and hope," Bronisław Komorowski said.

The conference was also attended by Regional Development Minister Elzbieta Bienkowska and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere.

Later on that day, the King of Norway Harald V and Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski took part in a "Challenges and cooperation in defense and security" seminar. The defense industry and the upcoming NATO summit in Chicago were among the topics.

Norwegian and Polish defense ministers - Barth Eide and Tomasz Siemoniak - made their speeches during the seminar. (PAP)
