President Bronisław Komorowski unveiled on Monday a commemorative plaque to mark US-China political talks held in Warsaw in the period of 1958-1970.

The plaque was unveiled in the Myslewicki Palace in Lazienki Royal Park in Warsaw, where the historic talks used to be held. The ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to Poland Lee Feinstein and China's Ambassador to Poland Sun Yuxi.

"Poles often think of themselves and of their state as located between the East and the West. Today we are part of the Western world, but we are proud to remember all the fragments of our history, all the events that prove that Poland's special relations with the East have been and will probably be very useful," the president said.

Bronisław Komorowski stressed that not only diplomats, but all citizens should remember the historic place. "It is worth remembering that in this place (...) someone had to work hard, someone had to show their political bravery to start talks centred on the positive future of the whole world," Komorowski said.

US Ambassador Lee Feinstein stressed that the plaque would be a symbol of the commitment of Poland, the US and China to building and spreading welfare across the Atlantic and the Pacific.

Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi remarked that the talks had helped to normalise US-China relations and to preserve peace and maintain global security.

Confidential US-China talks took place in Warsaw between 1958 and 1970. Later they resulted in establishing diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the US. (PAP)
