This year Adam Mickiewicz award honoured President of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) Professor Michal Kleiber, French former Culture Minister Jack Lang and German former Bundestag President Professor Rita Suessmuth.

The award is granted for contribution to the development of French-German-Polish cooperation within the framework of the Weimar Triangle. Awards were handed to the laureates by head of the Presidential Chancellery Jacek Michalowski and chairman of the committee for supporting French-German-Polish cooperation Klaus-Heinrich Standke during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Congratulatory letters to the laureates were sent by President Bronisław Komorowski, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande who stressed the importance of cooperation within the Weimar Triangle.

"Today the Adam Mickiewicz awards are received by people whose contribution for cooperation between our countries and the building a unified Europe are widely known," wrote the Polish president.

He underlined that the laureates of the award stood out on international fora as "staunch supporters and effective practitioners of European integration."

Bronisław Komorowski also wrote that the idea of Polish, German and French rapprochement and these states' cooperation for unified Europe, on which Weimar Triangle rested, was especially precious to him.

French President Francois Hollande in his letter wrote that since its beginning in 1991 the Weimar Triangle allowed for closer cooperation between the three countries, the restoration of common values and strengthening of solidarity between the nations.

"Rapprochement between our countries in all fields, especially in politics, economy and science is a singular element in building unified Europe," Hollande wrote.

He emphasized that each of this year's laureates, personally, in his/her own field contributed to this rapprochement. "On behalf of France I want to heartily congratulate the laureates," Holland wrote.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her letter noted that 20 year ago when Polish, French and German foreign ministers laid basis for the Weimar Triangle they wanted to overcome the difficult European history. Many hopes cherished then came true and European Union common tasks have become tasks of the Weimar Triangle, the chancellor added.

She stressed that Germany, Poland and France are now obliged to "further the unification process." (...) This year Adam Mickiewicz award laureates are perfect examples of such cooperation," Merkel wrote.

The Adam Mickiewicz award, granted since 2006, honours people and institutions credited with strengthening cooperation and understanding between the Weimar Triangle nations, reconciliation and European cooperation.

The award, granted annually, first honoured Weimar Triangle founders, namely French, German and Poland's Foreign Ministers Roland Dumas, Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Krzysztof Skubiszewski. (PAP)
