President Bronisław Komorowski on Tuesday presented to U.S. Ambassador to Poland Lee A. Feinstein the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, the Presidential Chancellery reported.

President Komorowski awarded the U.S. ambassador "for his outstanding contributions to Polish-American relations by strengthening cooperation between Poland and the United States." Ambassador Feinstein is concluding his diplomatic mission to Poland.

Ambassador Feinstein thanked for the distinction describing it as "a great honour" and for the Polish president's friendship to the United States and the American people.

"Poland's story is one of opportunities seized and unprecedented success. It is a story of a people who against tremendous odds reached for and achieved freedom and democracy. Our time in this historic and beautiful country has been a great gift to my family and me," the U.S. ambassador said.

Ambassador Feinstein recalled that Presidents Komorowski and Obama agreed in December 2010 to establish a U.S. Air Force Aviation Detachment in Poland. "One of my proudest achievements was to negotiate and sign this agreement in June 2011," he stressed.

"The Aviation Detachment is now a reality. The U.S. Commander has arrived in Poland last week to begin opening the base in Lask. This is the first full-time presence of American boots on the ground in Poland. It is an historic step and a tangible symbol of our commitment to each other's security and of our shared determination to make the world a safer place," Ambassador Feinstein said.

"Thanks to your leadership, Mr. President, Polish-American partnership on democracy has never been closer. And Poland's bold and skillful democratic transition is a model for the world. Poland and America speak with one voice on Belarus and Ukraine. President Obama personally appreciates your leadership in pushing for continued progress in Ukraine and ensuring that Ukraine's door to Europe remains open," the U.S. ambassador said.

Lee A. Feinstein was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Poland in 2009. In July the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw announced that he would be replaced by Stephen D. Mull. (PAP)
