The Polish community in Latvia is perceived here as a vehicle for building increasingly good relations with Poland, President Bronisław Komorowski said on Saturday, on the second day of his official visit to Latvia.

Talking to Polish reporters after meeting officials of the Polish Diaspora Consultative Council in Riga president Komorowski praised the attitude of Latvians and the Latvian state to Poles living there.

"Everybody sees local Poles (..) as a chance for Polish-Latvian cooperation in various areas, including in business," he noted.

Trade between the two countries has been growing at a rate of even 30 pct annually, Komorowski added. "The situation is getting ever better and so does the opinion on Poland and Latvian Poles," he said.

According to 2008 figures 53,000 Poles and people of Polish descent live in Latvia. Many of them are members of the Union of Poles in Latvia operating through 15 regional chapters. (PAP)
