EU funds won't replace own enterprise

Polish-Latvian Economic Forum

Polish-Latvian Economic Forum

EU funds will not replace our own enterprise, President Bronisław Komorowski said Friday in Riga at a Polish-Latvian economic forum. Bronisław Komorowski suggested for both countries to build a common gas forwarding system.

In his address to the forum president Komorowski admitted that EU membership provided "a chance for funding and wise legal and systemic advice" but noted that "nothing can replace domestic enterprise and labour".

President Komorowski reminded that countries like Latvia and Poland had development delays and therefore had to "work harder and more effectively" than the developed EU countries.

"Our future depends on our work and EU funding" the president said.

Commenting on Poland's economic progress, Bronisław Komorowski noted that Poland was in the lead in coping with the European economic crisis. "We can say with pride that Poland managed to keep up economic crisis during the deep crisis in the eurozone and for a time was the only country with growth", the president remarked.

Bronisław Komorowski also praised Latvia for its economic reforms which helped the country overcome its deep economic slump. In his opinion the reforms, which demanded considerable sacrifices from Latvians, "helped build a new chance" for Latvia.

Earlier today Komorowski spoke with Latvian President Andris Berzins and parliament head Solvita Aboltina. (PAP)
