President Bronisław Komorowski met representatives of the Orthodox Church on Thursday on the occasion of the New Year and the Orthodox Christmas, which is celebrated 13 days after the Catholic holiday.

Bronisław Komorowski received the representatives of the Polish Orthodox Church, including its superior, Warsaw Metropolitan Archbishop Sawa, in the Presidential Palace.

"Diversity is beautiful if it is coupled with the ability to act together in common causes," the president said.

He wished all the best to the Orthodox community in Poland and assured that Poland, as their motherland, cares for all its citizens, irrespective of their religion or culture, as evidenced by centuries of Polish tradition of cultural diversity.

Bronislaw Komorowski also thanked the Polish Orthodox Church representatives for their input in improving relations between religions, including the preparation and attending to the visit of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill I of Moscow and all the Rus in August 2012.

"This visit evoked much interest in Poland and abroad (...) and it revived high hopes of the Holy See," Komorowski stressed.

The president thanked the Orthodox Church for its input in the development of Poland and for "intensifying the light of faith and strengthening the foundations of faith."

Archbishop Sawa thanked the president for his wishes and stressed that the Orthodox community had always grown, worked and fought for the good of their common motherland, Poland.

"It is a great task to be the President of Poland, to reconcile and unify in diversity," the Orthodox hierarch said.

Archbishop Sawa said it was time for "divisions, hostility and hatred to disappear." "Let us focus on what is common and what unifies us, instead of what divides us."

The hierarch wished the presidential couple all the best in the New Year. (PAP)
