The presidents of Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine met in Wisla, southern Poland, on Thursday to discuss the upcoming EU-Ukraine summit.

We want to help Ukraine in achieving the final, important, effect in the form of the signing of an EU-Ukraine association agreement during the November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Polish President Bronisław Komorowski told a press conference held together with Slovak and Ukraine Presidents Ivan Gasparovic and Viktor Yanukovic.

B. Komorowski said that the talks had brought a positive signal concerning what President Yanukovic would bring for the February 25 EU-Ukraine summit.

The Polish president assessed that President Yanukovic would be able to present a "package including hitherto achievements as well as planned steps linked with a deep reform in the Ukrainian system..."

President Komorowski also expressed his "conviction and optimism regarding a series of gestures and decisions which President Yanukovic had envisaged, important from the point of view of rebuilding Ukraine's image in EU countries and linked with two names - Yulia Tymoshenko as well as Yuri Lutsenko."

"We are fully aware of difficulties. But we also have a common determination to overcome them. We wish Ukraine success and this will be a common success on the path towards integration with the Western world," President Komorowski declared.

President Yanukovic said his country, together with Poland and Slovakia, had a common goal - to lead to the signing by Ukraine of an association agreement.

Yanukovic stressed that Ukraine had time until November 2013 to implement steps proposed by the European Commission. He expressed the conviction that reforms would bring his country closer to Europe in the sphere of the introduction of standards of a democratic state "in all areas."

President Gasparovic stressed that it was important that the association agreement be signed. "We want the EU-Ukraine association agreement to be signed, as if it is not sealed, talks could be frozen for a longer period of time."

Gasparovic said that "together with President Komorowski we have promised to help Ukraine under the condition that it will meet conditions (for signing the agreement) to which it has already agreed to." (PAP)
