President on foreign policy

President Bronisław Komorowski shares the strategic perspective for Poland outlined by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in his Sejm report delivered Wednesday.

Increased importance of relations with France, more realistic approach to relations with the USA and emphasis on Ukraine's future are among the weighty aspects of Poland's foreign policy that Sikorski rightly stressed in his speech, B. Komorowski told newsmen in parliament.

Sikorski "(...) discerned meaningful changes in the Polish foreign policy and security policy (...)," President Komorowski opined. One of them was "the not easy process of discarding the view that Poland should get ready for an expeditionary policy." This process was facilitated by NATO's decision to end its military role in Afghanistan in 2014, he added.

Bronisław Komorowski welcomed Sikorski's acknowledgement of an important change in Polish-French relations that helped achieve a success in negotiations on the EU 2014-2020 budget. France "played an important role" in that successful outcome, he added.

"A more realistic approach to relations with the USA and basing them on rational rather than on emotional premises is also a reason for satisfaction," the president went on.

Ukraine is one of Poland's top priorities and "should be encouraged by all means to discharge of the commitments it made," Komorowski declared, "the commitments which are a condition for signing the Association Treaty with the EU. (...) Failure to sign the accord may mean Ukraine's drift in a direction totally different than the EU," he warned. (PAP, own information)
