Presidents Komorowski and Saakashvili on Georgia-EU relations

Relations between Georgia and the EU and the country's internal situation dominated Thursday talks in Warsaw between Polish and Georgian and Presidents Bronisław Komorowski and Mikheil Saakashvili.

Polish president’s aide Jaromir Sokołowski told PAP that the presidents discussed Georgia's association negotiations with the EU and the political situation in Georgia and its region.

B. Komorowski assured Saakashvili that Poland supported Georgia's EU strivings but noted that negative developments in the country's political situation could impede the process. He also expressed hope that pro-European forces in Georgia, including the political opposition, will pool forces to press reforms necessary for the closure of the association talks, Sokołowski said.

In last October's parliamentary elections in Georgia Saakashvili's party United National Movement suffered an unexpected defeat to Bidzina Ivanishvili and his group Georgian Dream, which ended Saakashvili's almost 10-year domination on the Georgian political scene.

President Komorowski previously spoke with Saakashvili in Warsaw last December. At the time the Polish president expressed hope for Georgia's finalisation of its EU association agreement before the November 2013 Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. (PAP)
