Poland on Friday commemorated the 222nd anniversary of passing the May 3 Constitution, considered one of the milestones in the political history of Poland and the first modern written constitution in Europe.

Modern Polish patriotism should focus on the modernisation of the motherland, President Bronislaw Komorowski said during ceremonies in Warsaw.

The Constitution was opposed not only by foreign powers, but also by internal adversaries, who regarded themselves as true patriots and protectors of tradition, the president stressed.

"We know very well that the road to hell, particularly to the Polish hell, has been paved with good intentions, wonderful patriotic declarations, disputes allegedly concerning Poland and the happiness of its citizens," President Bronislaw Komorowski said.

He stressed that Poland should focus not only on cherishing its past greatness, but also on strengthening its modern political and economic position.

"We should consider what kind of patriotism Poland needs most now," Bronislaw Komorowski said.

Earlier in the day, President Komorowski granted orders to representatives of science, culture, art, sports and community activists for their input in the development of Poland. (PAP)
