European solidarity with Greece and efforts to stabilise the crisis in the country dominated Monday talks in Warsaw between Polish and Greek Presidents Bronislaw Komorowski and Karolos Papoulias.

Both presidents also discussed EU ties between their countries.

B. Komorowski assured that Poland solidarised with Greece and other crisis-torn EU countries.

"In full awareness that we are meeting at a time which is difficult for the EU and Greece owing to the economic crisis, I wish to express not only solidarity with Greece, but also the hope and conviction that by our common effort we will be able to enhance stability in Greece and other EU countries", President Komorowski declared.

Polish president also reminded that Poland had experienced an economic breakdown in the late 1980s and stressed that this had made it stronger and allowed the country to successfully fend off the European crisis in recent years.

Komorowski also underscored the importance of Polish-Greek cooperation in the EU and stressed that this found expression among others in both countries' successful strivings for funding under the new EU budget. The president also voiced contentment over Poland's rising trade with Greece and expressed the belief that the expansion of economic cooperation between both countries would help Greece master its crisis.

He also thanked Papoulias for his support of Ukraine's signature of an association agreement with the EU.

Papoulias said that relations between Poland and Greece were "on a very high level", and in this context mentioned an agreement on cultural, educational and scientific cooperation signed by both countries during the presidential talks.

He also stressed that Greece counted on European support in light of the crisis in the country, which was experiencing it painfully.

Karolos  Papoulias said that he and Bronislaw Komorowski also discussed the situation around Cyprus, which according to the Greek state head should be resolved by the UN but in keeping with the EU's acquis communautaire.

Also today Papoulias laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw.

On Tuesday the Greek state head will pay visits to the south-Polish historical city Krakow and Oswiecim, site of the World War Two German Nazi death camp Auschwitz. (PAP)
