President Bronislaw Komorowski honoured Polish tennis players with state distinctions for their successes during the Grand Slam tennis tournament at London Wimbledon in the Belvedere Palace on Monday. This was a Polish Wimbledon, the president said.

The Gold Cross of Merit went to Agnieszka Radwanska for "sport achievements and actions for the promotion of sport."

Jerzy Janowicz and Lukasz Kubot received Silver Crosses of Merit.

"This is a great privilege of the president that he may give thanks on behalf of himself and the entire nation. I want to thank you for moving moments, for hope and pride which we all shared after your successes," the president said.

He admitted that expectations were greater but ... "I heard a statement that sport events should be assessed objectively - dreams and yearning for greater successes should not deprive us from the satisfaction of what we managde to achieve. I thank you for your achievements and wish further successes," B.  Komorowski said.

On behalf of the sportsmen, who gifted the president with a token tennis racket Lukasz Kubot said he hoped Poles would long remember this year's London tournament. (PAP)
