President Bronislaw Komorowski honoured US Senator of Polish origin Barbara Mikulski with Polonia Restituta Order in Warsaw on Thursday. President Komorowski thanked Mikulski for lobbying for Poland's NATO membership and efforts for lifting visas for Poles.

"I would like to give thanks for building a good image of Poland in the US, for difficult but victorious actions for Poland's membership of NATO and for creating a climate encouraging Polish-US economic cooperation," the president said.

He also thanked Senator Mikulski for her long-time efforts to include Poland in the US Visa Waiver Programme. Mikulski, long-time advocate of Polish interests in the USA, co-authored a bill that would cover Poland with the US Visa Waiver Programme.

The senator, the grand-daughter of Polish immigrants from Baltimore was elected to the Senate in 1986 being one of two women sitting in the Senate at that time. She is now the woman-senator with the longest tenure. (PAP)
