President Bronislaw Komorowski left for New York on Monday to attend the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. While in the US, the president will also visit a navy base in Norfolk.

Upon arrival, the President Komorowski was scheduled to attend a welcome dinner given out by US President Barack Obama for the participants of the UN General Assembly session.

Bronislaw Komorowski will address the General Assembly on Wednesday.

"In his speech, the president will want to stress the key role of the UN in promoting peace and in solving conflicts in the world," Jaromir Sokolowski, presidential minister responsible for foreign affairs, has told PAP and the Radio Information Agency.

Jaromir Sokolowski said the president will also refer to a vital weakness of the United Nations - its ineffectiveness in situations such as the civil war in Syria, and the need to reform the organisation, including the Security Council.

In his opinion the conflict in Syria "led not only to the death of thousands of people and to an enormous humanitarian disaster, but also is a serious threat to regional security and stability."

Minister Sokolowski said that "Poland's priority is steps of the international community aimed to prevent further use of chemical weapons in Syria, securing and eliminating the chemical weapons stockpile."

President Komorowski in his speech is to express hope that the problem of Syrian chemical weapons will find "a political solution" and "a relevant UN Security Council resolution."

Minister Sokolowski recalled that Poland seeks to become a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council in 2018-2019.

During his stay in New York, President Komorowski is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with state leaders, including Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the presidents of Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia, as well as with the President of the European Council. "The meetings will focus on the prospect of signing an EU-Ukraine association agreement during the November Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius," said Sokolowski.

Polish President will participate in Tuesday's lunch hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The president is also scheduled to meet with business representatives, among others, of Polish technology companies operating in the Silicon Valley and of Polish-American business organisations.

On Thursday, the president will visit the US Navy base in Norfolk to "emphasize the special ally character of Polish-American ties." The president is to tour, among others, USS Theodore Roosevelt air craft carrier and the Allied Command for Transformation.

Also on Thursday, Komorowski will attend a gala of the Atlantic Council of the United States during which he will be honoured with the Global Citizen Award.

On Friday, the last day of the presidential stay in the US, Bronislaw Komorowski will visit a memorial site commemorating the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. (PAP)
