President on Security Council resolution on Syria

President Bronisław Komorowski in New York

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski believes that the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile should be carried out with the acceptance of the international community, including the U.N. Security Council.

"There is a long road ahead but undoubtedly the step in the right direction has been taken," President Komorowski told reporters in New York.

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Friday night to secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons stockpile.

The vote after two weeks of intense negotiations marked a major breakthrough in the paralysis that has gripped the council since the Syrian uprising began. Russia and China previously vetoed three Western-backed resolutions pressuring President Bashar Assad's regime to end the violence.

The resolution calls for consequences if Syria fails to comply, but those will depend on the council passing another resolution in the event of non-compliance.

According to President Komorowski, the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile should be carried out with the acceptance of the international community, including the U.N. Security Council, as "this gives a strong mandate to demand and execute its final liquidation.

If the international community speaks in one voice, the stronger its mandate is to force the implementation of difficult decisions," Bronisław Komorowski stressed. (PAP)
