President meets Israeli President Shimon Peres

We are sensitive to all signs of anti-Semitism worldwide and in Poland, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Monday in Jerusalem. President Komorowski and his wife are beginning a three-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

During his meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres, B. Komorowski said democratic Poland was intent on building the best and most dynamic relations with Israel. He also suggested that besides economy and science, these relations should take into account the historical bonds between Jews and Poles.

"I always imagined that Polish-Israeli relations should refer to our thousand years of ethnic coexistence on territories which were an ethnic, cultural and religious melting-pot", Komorowski said.

He added that Poland was sensitive to all signs of anti-Semitism, and through its history understood well what an exceptional task it was to rebuild one's statehood.

"The Jews regained (...) their country after a very long time. We remember that once there was also no Poland on the European map. We rebuilt the Polish state after an absence of 123 years. (...) We are sensitive to all threats to statehood and all signs of anti-Semitism in the world, in Europe and also in Poland", Komorowski declared.

He also wished Israel progress in its ongoing peace process and the Israelis more security in their region. "We wish a sense of security to all Israelis and to Jews worldwide", the Polish president said.

Peres confirmed that Poland's authorities "took a clear stand against anti-Semitism" and noted that the history of Polish-Israeli relations "contained chapters and things unfound in any other history".

Recalling that a vast part of the Jewish people once inhabited Poland, Peres assured that Israel would not forget that Jews were once permitted to live on its territory.

"Poland was closed in from all sides. The Jews were allowed only into some areas, but there they could speak Hebrew, pray to Jerusalem and lead their lives. They could be Jews although they were not in their country. Israel will not forget those years", Peres stated.

Reminding about Zionist leader and Israel founder David Ben-Gurion's Polish roots, Peres said that "true Zionism developed in Poland" and Israel had been "practically born in a Polish cradle".

Recalling the fate of the Jews in World War Two, Peres reminded that the German Nazis "devastated Poland" and that "almost half of Poland's Jews were slaughtered on Polish soil". He added that Holocaust descendants who visit Jewish martyrdom sites in Poland today come to "say that we shall never forget the Holocaust".

Peres praised the Polish leadership for its "clear and determined" rejection of anti-Semitism and assured that Israelis and Poles were determined to prevent the Holocaust repeating itself.

He also praised Bronislaw Komorowski's presidency, remarking that under his leadership Poland was "turning into an open European country," and thanked the Polish president for visiting Israel "at the time of important Israeli-Palestinian talks". (PAP)
