President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife Anna on Monday afternoon visited Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and the Menachem Begin Heritage Center as part of the presidential visit to Israel.

While in the Yad Vashem, President Komorowski stressed the importance of the Zegota Polish Council to Aid Jews during the Holocaust.

"That's why we are pleased with the Zegota tree. We would like people to remember that this (the Zegota organisation - PAP) was part of Poland's underground state and a unique phenomenon as it was not individual aid as in other countries, but a special branch of the Polish underground state which achieved a lot and is worth recalling," Bronislaw Komorowski said.

The Polish president lit a candle in the Yad Vashem's Hall of Remembrance.

The Yad Vashem has recognized some 25,000 Righteous Among the Nations from 47 countries, including 6,394 Poles. The official title is awarded by the Yad Vashem Institute on behalf of the State of Israel and the Jewish people to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.

Bronislaw Komorowski also visited the Menachem Begin Heritage Center that is devoted to former Israeli PM and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Menachem Begin who was born on Polish soil. (PAP)
