President: Poland is the gate to Europe

  |   The Polish-UAE economic forum in Dubai The Polish-UAE economic forum in Dubai

Poland is the gate to Europe for Arab countries, President Bronislaw Komorowski said at the opening of a Polish-UAE economic forum in Dubai on Thursday. The president praised Poland's achievements of the past 25 years and described them as impressive.

Bronislaw Komorowski, on an economic tour of the Arabian Gulf countries, encouraged Emirati businessmen to strengthen trade relations with Poland and invest in the country.

The forum was attended by several dozen Polish businessmen representing such sectors as construction, chemicals, transport, food, renewable energy and luxury goods.

Poland is open to investments as it continues its privatisation process in the energy, chemical, pharmaceutical and spa industries, the president said.

"For Poland, Dubai is not only a global centre of finance and trade, but also the site of true, interesting dialogue between the East and the West," Bronislaw Komorowski stressed and declared that the United Arab Emirates is Poland's "key Middle Eastern economic partner."

He reminded that in 2014 Poland will celebrate the 25th anniversary of regaining independence. "Poland's achievements during the 25 years of our freedom, also economic freedom, are impressive and they need to be stressed," Bronislaw Komorowski said.

The president expressed hope that the Expo 2020 fair in Dubai will be "a spectacular success" for the UAE.

"Poland looks with true admiration at the UAE's role as a regional centre - we try to play a similar role in Europe," President Komorowski said as he reminded that Poland is the sixth largest EU's economy and "a gate of sorts to the whole region."

The president stressed that Poland managed to maintain growth despite the recent financial crisis and argued that it was poised to grow even faster once the crisis seems to be over.

In a conversation with Polish reporters, the president argued that the UAE is the gate to the Arabian Gulf and "an excellent bridge to the economies of other regions of the world." "It is Poland's valuable and very important partner."

Bronislaw Komorowski stressed that Poland is looking for business partners also outside Europe. "External markets in third countries are of huge importance for maintaining our exports."

Hisham Al Shirawi, 2nd Vice Chairman of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that Poland is an important market for Dubai. Poland is "a gateway into select European markets while Dubai is the door to markets across the Middle East, Asia and Africa and offers a safe and stable base in the high-growth Middle East region."

Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, called Bronislaw Komorowski "a friend of the Emirates and the whole region." He said that the common goal of both countries is to raise the level of bilateral trade relations.

He expressed hope that Polish-Emirati trade will surpass USD 1 billion by the end of 2013. "Poland is for us an ideal partner in Europe," the minister stressed. He thanked Poland for its support for Dubai's candidacy as the Expo 2020 host.

The UAE was Poland's third largest trade partner in the Middle East in 2012, after Israel and Saudi Arabia, with turnover at USD 542 million, including USD 442 million in Polish and USD 102 million in Emirati exports.

Also on Thursday, President Komorowski met Emir Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the vice President & Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. (PAP)
