It is Poland's role to show that Russia has been violating numerous norms of international law and international obligations concerning Crimea, and to take steps convincing the West to take firm actions, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said on Monday.

The president, who made the statement after a meeting of the National Security Council (RBN) on Ukraine, stressed that all the participants in the meeting shared this opinion.

"It is Poland's role to make the western world, the part of which Poland is, react and announce further moves if the Ukrainian conflict continues to escalate," President Komorowski said.

The president declared that he would discuss the situation in Ukraine during his visit to Turkey this week.

Speaking about the need for NATO to hold permanent consultations inside the alliance, the president stressed that Poland should take steps "which could make NATO a tool serving good stabilisation in Ukraine".

Poland wants NATO to urgently convene the North Atlantic Council under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty providing for allied consultations in case of threat, the president said. (PAP)
