President Bronisław Komorowski

The situation in Ukraine and steps designed to overcome the current crisis were the subject of a Sunday phone conversation of Polish and U.S. Presidents Bronislaw Komorowski and Barack Obama.

The U.S. president confirmed the security guarantees for Poland. The two leaders condemned the escalation of Russian actions in the Black Sea Crimean peninsula.

According to presidential minister Jaromir Sokolowski, the Polish president "stressed the need to formulate a tough, adequate and coordinated answer of the West to Russia's intrusion into Ukraine and a breach of international law".

"President Komorowski declared Poland's readiness to actively co-author this strategy," the minister said and added that the two presidents stressed the significance of economic aid that should soon be offered to Ukraine and declared support for the new government in Kiev.

On Saturday the Polish president spoke in separate phone calls to Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov, European Council President Herman van Rompuy and on Sunday he spoke with the presidents of the Baltic States.  (PAP, own information)
