Efficient economic reforms in Poland and Estonia may be an example for other countries, including Ukraine, presidents of the two countries said during a Wednesday economic forum in Warsaw.

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves addressing the forum said that Poland and Estonia may give Ukraine a lesson similar to that received by both countries during their own political and economic transformations.

According to President Ilves, if this time around Ukraine does not manage to efficiently reform its economy, it will be hard to say when this may happen.

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski argued that in order to come out of the deep economic crisis, Ukraine must open its economy to the world and start free market-oriented reforms.

President Komorowski added that he is looking with recognition at Estonia which managed to go through with visionary reforms to raise its competitiveness.

President Ilves remarked that although Estonia has a small population, it managed to increase its importance through innovations. He noted that all prescriptions in Estonia are digital, 99 percent of all bank transfers and tax returns are conducted on-line.

He added that thanks to special laws regarding the e-signature and a sophisticated system of exchange of digital information Estonians may settle a number of official matters via the Internet. This, according to the president, generates savings reaching some 2.0 percent of the GDP.

President Ilves argued that countries such as Poland and Estonia, assuming they will invest in technologies of the future, will significantly outpace those who fail to do so. He assessed that thanks to such approach Poland and Estonia may become an object of envy to west European countries in 20 years' time. (PAP)
