Pope Francis declared John XXIII and John Paul II saints at 10:14 on Sunday morning. The canonisation mass was attended by some 800,000 people, retired Pope Benedict XVI among them.

In his homily during the service Pope Francis called the new saints "two brave men who were filled with the courage of the Holy Spirit and bore witness before the Church and the world to God's goodness and mercy."

He added that the two saints were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century. "They experienced its tragedies but were not overwhelmed by them. For them God was more powerful, faith was more powerful," he added.

John Paul II was described in the homily as a pope of the family. "He once said himself that he would like to be remembered as the pope of the family," Pope Francis said.

After the mass, the pope thanked retired Pope Benedict XVI, cardinals, bishops and priests as well as delegations from all over the world who came to attend the ceremony.

More than 90 delegations were present. The thousands of Poles attending included President Bronislaw Komorowski (one of 24 heads of state present), Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Sejm (lower house) Speaker Ewa Kopacz, Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz as well as former presidents Lech Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski.
