President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife Anna opened an exhibition about Pope John Paul II at the Polish Institute in Rome on Saturday; the president also presented state decorations to Italian citizens and Poles living in Italy.

After officially opening the exhibition at the Polish Institute in Rome on Saturday, President Komorowski thanked everyone whose efforts have enabled direct Polish-Italian relations "to continue to expand and be more and more prominently present in our lives."

"Pope of Freedom" is an exhibition of about 100 photographs presenting Poland's road to freedom through John Paul II's pilgrimages to Poland as well as other countries.

During the meeting at the Polish Institute the Polish president presented national awards to nine Italians and Poles living in Italy.

Among them was Sante Graciotti, who received a Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for developing Polish-Italian cultural and scientific cooperation.

The president also presented a Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta to Rev. Hieronim Fokcinski for achievements in research, publishing and working for the expatriate Polish community.

A Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland was presented to Krystyna Jaworska for her work in the expatriate Polish community and for commemorating and popularising knowledge about Polish soldiers who fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino (1944). (PAP)
