President Bronislaw Komorowski on Friday met with Petro Poroshenko, a candidate in the Ukrainian presidential elections planned for May. They assessed the situation in Ukraine and discussed the prospects for resolving the crisis.

"The president informed (Poroshenko) of different forms of Polish support for Ukraine, including an observer mission to the presidential elections and experts' help with local-government reform," Jaromir Sokolowski, the Presidential Chancellery minister who handles foreign affairs told PAP.

Poroshenko declared his will to uphold the strategic Polish-Ukrainian partnership and cooperate with Poland on European integration, local-government reform and combating corruption, according to Sokolowski. The minister added that Poroshenko had also declared his willingness to continue Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation.

Poroshenko told reporters that it had been a constructive and productive meeting. "We pointed out that Poland, the EU and the whole world consider it extremely important to hold free elections on May 25 which would be an expression of people's true will," he said.

Poroshenko also said that the Polish expert teams supporting Ukrainian local-government reform would "help Ukraine make the necessary changes to its constitution and speed up the country's decentralisation."

The Ukrainian presidential candidate expressed his gratitude for Poland's proposal to work with Ukraine on reforming its armed forces. He added that it was important to form a Polish-Ukrainian-Lithuanian brigade headquartered in Lublin (eastern Poland). (PAP)
