Ukraine was the main subject of talks held by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and visiting EC President Jose Manuel Barroso in Krakow on Saturday.

The forthcoming presidential elections in Ukraine are a very good instrument to stabilise the situation in that country, President Komorowski said after a meeting with the EC president.

"The presidential elections, which one has to support so that they could be held in peace, can be an element stabilising the situation in Ukraine," the Polish president said and added that they could be also an opportunity to stress the need to unite the country.

Summing up his meeting with the EC head President Komorowski said they had a common opinion about the problems of East Europe. The Polish president said he was really glad as "he was talking with the EC president but also the Portuguese whose country was on the EU's western border". "This is another proof of Europe's deep unification," he said.

The EC head told reporters after the meeting that the EU appreciated the role played by Poland in the EU over the recent years. The EU is stronger. One can look into the future with hope thanks to such countries as Poland which joined the EU in 2004, Barroso said.

The EC president added his talk with Komorowski focused also on Ukraine. He stressed the point was to support Ukraine so that it could become an independent, sovereign, stable, democratic and wealthy country.

The EC head invited President Komorowski to pay a visit to Brussels.
