Presidents appeal to vote in EP elections

Joachim Gauck, Giorgio Napolitano and Bronislaw Komorowski, the presidents of Germany, Italy and Poland (Nov. 19, 2012)

Joachim Gauck, Giorgio Napolitano and Bronislaw Komorowski, the presidents of Germany, Italy and Poland, in a joint appeal have urged Europeans to take part in the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections.

Freedom, prosperity, peace and human rights are the fundamental European values, the presidents stressed.

The presidents reminded that this year's elections to the EP were exceptional due to the fact that the powers of the assembly had been increased under the Lisbon Treaty.

The heads of state also stressed that EU citizens enjoyed numerous benefits, including the right to live or set up a business anywhere within the bloc, travel without border control and often without the need to change currency, and the possibility to study anywhere in Europe.

The presidents also stressed increased EU's strength in such areas as security, natural environment, social issues or food safety. They also pointed to the union's better ability to counter adverse global economic trends.

The European integration has always aimed to strengthen peace among nations, said Gauck, Komorowski and Napolitano. The Ukraine crisis has revealed the need for better coordination of European foreign, defence and energy policies, they added.

The EP elections will be held all over the EU between May 23 and 25. Poles will cast their votes on May 25. (PAP)
