President Bronislaw Komorowski on Wednesday in New York presented Polish-born photographer Ryszard Horowitz with a commander's cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Presenting the order, President Komorowski said that each such distinction was based on "merit, hard work or a wonderful passion that gains proper recognition." This is the kind of activity on which also the success of Polish-American relations is built, according to the Polish president.

Horowitz was born in 1939 in Krakow and as a child during World War II was a prisoner of Nazi concentration camps. He is a graduate of Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts.

He emigrated to the United States in 1959, where he attended the Pratt Institute and went on to work for numerous agencies, including as artistic director. He founded his own photography studio in 1967. Horowitz is considered a pioneer of special effects in photography in the times before digital images. (PAP)
