President: EU needs genuine diversification of gas supply

The European Union needs real and not pretend diversification of its gas supply, according to President Bronislaw Komorowski, who criticised the idea of the South Stream pipeline on Tuesday at a press conference in Braga, Portugal.

Due to its geographical location, issues of security - including energy security - were especially important to Poland, President Bronislaw Komorowski told a press conference at the end of his two-day visit to Portugal to attend the 10th meeting of Arraiolos Group presidents devoted to energy and migration.

The Polish president added that Portugal, situated at the other end of the EU, had a similar perception of the problem. In his view, underlining the importance of energy security was necessary as this was a major element of EU security in general.

Bronislaw Komorowski expressed his satisfaction that the presidents meeting in Braga had managed to find a common ground "of concern for energy security and means of increasing it."

Among other things, the Polish president continued, the heads of state had agreed that there was a need to build a network of interconnectors, or internal connections between EU countries, and to work towards full diversification of sources of energy raw materials.

Referring to plans for building the South Stream pipeline through which gas from Russia is to flow to Europe bypassing Ukraine, Komorowski said that he meant real diversification and not "deliveries of the same gas from the same source along a different route."

Poland's position is that the negative trend of relying on gas deliveries from a single source should not be strengthened. "Genuine diversification means a different supplier who cannot turn off the (gas) tap," the president explained.

The Polish president's views were not shared by the presidents of Austria, Hungary and Bulgaria, who support the South Stream project's construction.

"Poland, Portugal, Spain and many other EU countries agree that there is an urgent need to limit the negative effects, both economic and political, of (EU countries') current serious reliance on a single energy supplier," President Komorowski also said.

"Efforts need to be made ahead of time, not in a crisis but in advance, to limit the negative effects of a supplier's monopoly. Poland made such decisions and as of March will have a great gas terminal in Swinoujscie capable of large-scale transport of liquefied gas," the Polish president added.

The Arraiolos Group consists of Austria, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. The group's first meeting took place in October 2003 in Arraiolos, Portugal, and the previous one in Krakow in Poland in 2013. (PAP)
